This compact cultivar of the clumping Bamboo multiplex usually reaches 9-10 feet. Because of its thick nature, Bambusa multiplex 'Fernleaf' is highly prized as a short, thick hedge. When temperatures drop below 6 degrees F, the plants will probably defoliate and the canes will die to the ground at 0 degrees F. Our plants have reliably resprouted from 0 degrees several times over the last 20 years. Sets the standard for shorter denser privacy hedges. Fernleaf is so dense it also acts as a sound barrier. This variety is a clumping variety and as such is non-invasive. Hardier than many clumping bamboo. Zone 7b through zone 11. Height averages 12 feet tall with canes _ inch in diameter. Moderate watering after plant becomes established. Readily accepts full sun to full shade. Its small caliper culms make it a popular hedge bamboo because the Fernleaf bamboo responds very well to trimming with a hedge trimmer. New leaves on a trimmed Fernleaf become somewhat smaller and denser making it a very tight, compact hedge.
